Behind Closed Doors.
From the tree-lined streets of Back Bay’s architecturally renowned Victorian brownstones to the charm of Beacon Hill’s cobblestone paths and Federal-style brick row houses, to the Seaport and downtown’s, luxurious and contemporary high-rise condominiums, the work we do at Kenneth Vona and Son Construction goes on behind the doors of Boston’s most elite and historical neighborhoods.
With our expertise in historic restoration, we meticulously preserve original details of iconic Back Bay and Beacon Hill residences, by carefully restoring architecturally significant design elements. Because these homes reside within historic districts, there are restrictions on making changes to the exteriors of these buildings, but on the inside, the sky’s the limit, allowing us to bring these interiors back to the 1800’s, but with a modern feel and function. To preserve authenticity, we use craftsmen with expertise in the restoration of historical details, like stonework, or decorative ironwork. These professionals are masters of their craft, possessing specialized knowledge of historic techniques—such as the restoration of original 1 and ¾ inch-wide, face-nailed flooring, and mid-19th century plaster techniques, no longer used. And while our first choice is always to restore original detail, in an effort to maintain the distinctive character of these elegant residences, when we can’t, we turn to the exceptional talent at Kenneth Vona Millwork to carefully replicate these details, beautifully integrating the past with the present, to create homes that boast both style and modern function for the way we live today.
When we’re not restoring history, we’re making it, building out some of Boston’s most luxurious high-rise condominiums. New construction comes with its own set of challenges we’ve learned to master. When we Merge two units into one, we focus on proportion to ensure a cohesive result. We lean into our technical savvy to orchestrate things like lighting and motorized window treatments, which must be considered early. New construction comes with an existing plumbing layout, which requires flexibility and innovation to build around what has already been installed, but by relying on the expertise of craftsmen with specialized skills, we personalize these residences with amenities the unit was not built with, like gas fireplaces and marble mantles. The end-product is a statement-making balance of modern function and architectural integrity.
While you may know us for building custom homes on the outskirts of the city, you can also find us restoring and reimagining downtown’s most storied residences, both old and new, for Boston’s next generation.
